Roppongi Hills - Tokyo 2003

Architecture
Roppongi hills is one of the most visited attraction in Tokyo this year. A huge new complex to replace a whole district. Here are some impressions of this amazing project!

The complex has its own Roppongi hills homepage. Also, the building company, Mori Building. There is also a nice Roppongi Map at Mapion and here.
The tower from the outside, the Hyatt Hotel, and the terrace of the Norwegian restaurant "juniper" between the hotel and the main tower.
A water-processing unit at a spa in the shopping-area, and the Garden at the backside of the complex. Third picture is the front of the TV Asahi Building that faces the park.
On the right side of the front, towards the main tower, there is the stage for life performances of the TV station. Above it, you can see the two condo-towers. The third picture shows the mid-level roof of the hotel's conference area behind that the roof of the TV Asahi, the glass cone for the visit of the tower's top on the left and Tokyo Tower in the background.
The tower next to the wall of TV Asahi, and at night. The third picture is already from the south towards Tokyo tower. On the left edge you can see another new building, made mainly of glass, but half empty since so many office space became available at the same time, and Roppongi hills is more prestigious.
A closer look on Tokyo Tower: Below on the right you can see an extensive temple, the tall brown building above that with the white 'hat' is Hamamatsu-cho tower. The second picture is a look towards the north-west. You can see the area of the former defense ministry on the left, on the right edge a part of the white IBM's headquarter. Third, the rainbow bridge with Odaiba in the background.
A very nice perspective on the two condo-towers, the also newly constructed Shinagawa area and Shinjuku on the third picture, with the Aoyama cemetery in the foreground.
First, a look on the quite large US-Military base with its heliport. Then a quite big model of the complex inside the observatory. Third, you can see how Roppongi Hills looked in 1953: No tall buildings, wide grass areas! The edge in the back is parallel to TV Asahi dori, right is Roppongi dori.
Then, the development: In 1992, just before construction had begun, you can already see the larger TV Asahi Dori in the background. Also, the taller Nissan Building at Roppongi dori is there. Finally, 2003, everything is finished. The Nissan Building is still there, the TV Asahi building moved towards the front, but somehow kept a similar shape. The tunnel formerly crossing Roppongi dori now now ends there, so you can drive directly from Azabu-juban to Roppongi-dori without having to turn back. The third picture nicely shows the height development over the years. One can also see how the highway lies above Roppongi-Dori, making it a very noisy and most of all ugly street.
The model has some very nice details. It shows all the buildings surrounding the area, the construction of the rooftops and the garden area. Finally, the tower at night, during full moon! The blue strip of light is constantly moving up the tower.
