Living on the Airport - Japanese Style

Architecture As we know from the Tom Hanks Movie, living on the Airport is not really a fun affair. If you have your house there, departure seems even less possible. Now imagine you have the house first, and then the Airport comes - You have the choice of moving away or endure the noise. People in Japan have a special relationship to their land and the house their ancestors lived in. So some people think they rather stay where they are and let the Airport be built around them. The result is that Narita Airport has several corners cut out to acomodate for houses that would not move. The first one is connected to the outside world with a tunnel [Map]. The second one is 100 meters away from the landing strip (upper left corner), the noise and wind must be incredible. [Map]. There are several other houses and farms around the airport, and the whole structure is clustered and stretched to accomodate them. This makes taxi time of the airplanes very long. Also, those homes have high fences built around them by the airport Authorities... (Images from Google Maps, enhanced for contrast)
