Galapagos Turtles

Galapagos
Giant Turtles! These are some pictures from wild turtles as well as from the Darwin research station. The last set of pictures is from wild turtles of the main island, where they are much easier to find than on the other islands.

Turtles are moving slowly and can be easily spotted. At least you will find the remainders of them, parts of turtle shell. In the Darwin research station you can find young ones and elder ones, and there are several different types of them on the islands.
Some types are more endangered than others, specially one kind where only one living male is left over, "Lonely George". The people at Darwin are trying to mate him with a genetically close female, but no success so far. There is one area with several of them, and you can watch them eating, which is quite interesting, their huge size and slow motion along with their apparent weight is very impressive and something that you have to experience live.
The huge claws and the long extremities are quite impressing. given the relatively long thin legs they must have quite some power to move themselves along.
On the islands where you can see wild turtles, you can find street signs for turtle crossing. Given the street layout however, I do not think this helps. They are so slow and big, surely damaging severely every car. People running into them must be drunk, and wont respect the sign either...
We got to some area where the turtles eat a plant that is growing as well on the water as on the ground. This makes it impossible to see where there are waterholes, and where you can step. When the turtles move, you can feel the earth shake a bit when they "sit" down, and it makes a noise as if you drop o tipple-sized bowling ball on the ground.
The face is quite interesting also. They seem to look at you from every angle... further you will see signs of the turtles everywhere...
